The Society of Software Engineers (SSE) is a very vibrant club at RIT. We have over 100 active members that are constantly mentoring, doing software projects, playing intramural sports, hosting & attending events together and arranging gatherings with companies in the industry.
For mentoring, our lab (GOL-1670) is open from 10:00AM to 6:00PM and any student, regardless of their program, can come in and ask questions for any class that the Software Engineering curriculum incorporates. Moreover, the Mentoring Committee holds practice exams the night before popular CS and SE exams and offers 1-on-1 tutoring and a full review of the practice exam afterwards. There's also free pizza. :)
The Projects Committee is the newest committee to the society, but it is by no means the smallest. In this committee, SSE members come together and work on Software Engineering projects for fun and research. Our current projects include a singing tesla coil, a web-controllable slideshow for all of our TVs and a large multitouch wall. In addition, the first weekend of winter and spring quarters, many SSE members come together for Rapid Development Weekend where a medium-sized software project is executed from requirements to testing & release all in one weekend. Previous Rapid Development projects include a capture the flag game on SSE's campus, a completely anonymous file transfer system, and an adventure game resembling Pokémon.
SSE also is host to many fun events - every week we try to host events for our members and subsidize portions of the costs. Our biggest event is the SSE Winter Ball where we decorate the GCCIS atrium in a theme and open up the event to all RIT students - it's a smash hit! We also go out camping, barbecuing, watch movies together, go on trips to Rochester museums and many others. In addition, SSE has many intramural sports teams that play all academic year.
We also have very strong relationships with Microsoft, Google, Apple, Northrup Grumman, Goodrich, IBM, Oracle and many other companies. It's very common for companies to approach us and ask to present to members during our meetings and the events are very well received.
We are also the hosts of the very popular Voices in Software Engineering (ViSE) speaker series. We've previously brought in speakers like Bjarne Stoustrup (the original author of the C++ programming language) and Alan Atlas (a certified Scrum trainer).
Although we may be biased, the members of the SSE are really friendly and enjoy meeting new people (e.g. you!) so by all means please stop by the lab sometime! We’d love to get to know you!
